Outpatient Programs

Outpatient services are provided at three convenient locations by highly-qualified staff, many of whom have advanced training in specialty areas. Each patient is evaluated and receives a treatment plan, which includes desired goals and outcomes and the time frame necessary to achieve these results.

Physical Therapy

We assess and treat patients with a variety of diagnoses : orthopedic, pulmonary, cancer, neurological and pediatrics. The patient's goals are an integral part of the treatment plan. We work together to achieve these goals.

Our areas of speciality include:

Orthopedic and Sports Rehabilitation:

With advanced degrees in orthopedic physical therapy, our therapists are highly trained in the evaluation and treatment of musculoskeletal and soft tissue injuries, post-surgical rehabilitation, foot and ankle disorders. Fitness and wellness are included in all treatment goals.

Spine Rehabilitation

McKenzie technique is an advanced assessment and treatment technique following the teaching of the internationally recognized McKenzie Institute. Several of our therapists have trained in the technique. Core stabilization techniques are also an effective tool that are used by our skilled therapists to help achieve the patient's goals.

Aquatic Therapy

Physical therapy offers many people another option for treatment when land-based physical therapy cannot be tolerated. The bouyancy properties of water help create a safe, relaxing and less stressful atmosphere for exercise.

Pediatric Rehabilitation

We teach your child the proper ways to move or speak so they can gain function and interact with their peers. Our goal is to motivate children to understand that movement and speech are both fun and rewarding and as a result promote the child's independence.

Children with developmental delays, neurological and musculoskeletal impairments, sensory integration dysfunction, torticollis, post-operative and other pediatric health concerns are seen by our physical, occupational and speech therapists.

Cancer Rehabilitation

For many cancer patients, the side-effects of treatment can be as challenging as fighting the disease itself. Our therapists work as a team with the physicians, surgeons, and oncologists to help patients better manage side effects, decrease fatigue and improve their ability to handle daily tasks with less pain.

Pulmonary Rehabilitation

If you are living with breathing problems as a result of COPD, emphysema, chronic bronchitis, asthma, pulmonary fibrosis, lung cancer or lung surgery, we can teach you techniques and strategies to help reduce your shortness of breath and the anxiety it brings. An individualized exercise program will focus on improving your ability to tolerate activities with less shortness of breath and fatigue.

Occupational Therapy

Occupational therapists focus on helping individuals improve their ability to perform the activities that “occupy” their everyday life. Including, but not limited to, activities of daily living, home management and job tasks. The goal of the occupational therapy program is to maximize the return of lost function from an injury by restoring physical ability, teaching new skills, and/or through modifying activities that will help increase your independence with the work, self-care, and leisure activities that are important to you.

The Hand and Upper Extremity Program

The Occupational Therapy staff has created a Hand and Upper Extremity Program at Middlesex Hospital. It was established due to the complex and diverse range of injuries that happen to the upper extremities and hands. The focus of the program is to help patients regain maximum use of their hands and upper extremities following work and non-work related injuries, surgery or onset of disease. Our staff includes occupational therapists with advanced training and national certification as hand therapists. To become a Certified Hand Therapist (CHT), a therapist must have a minimum of five years clinical experience, 4,000 hours of clinical practice in hand therapy and pass the national certification exam.

Patients are often referred to the Hand and Upper Extremity Program at Middlesex Hospital for the following:
