What is a Baby Friendly Hospital?

The Pregnancy and Birth Center at Middlesex Hospital has been designated as "Baby-Friendly" by Baby-Friendly USA. The Baby-Friendly Hospital Initiative recognizes hospitals that provide an optimal level of care and information for breastfeeding moms.

Middlesex Hospital's Pregnancy and Birth Center is staffed by a dedicated Lactation Consultant and nurses who are specially trained to help new mothers work through any difficulties they may encounter with breastfeeding.

We also recognize that while breastfeeding is best for babies, some mothers and babies will find it challenging.  That's why we're also experts in alternate feeding methods.  Our ultimate goal is to ensure that mothers leave the hospital confident that they will be able to provide the very best care for their new bundle of joy.

Baby-Friendly USA is the authority for the implementation of the Baby-Friendly Hospital Initiative (BFHI), a global program sponsored by the World Health Organization (WHO) and the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF). The initiative encourages and recognizes hospitals and birthing centers that offer an optimal level of care for breastfeeding mothers and their babies. Based on the Ten Steps to Successful Breastfeeding, this prestigious international award recognizes birth facilities that offer breastfeeding mothers the information, confidence, and skills needed to successfully initiate and continue breastfeeding their babies.

Currently there are only 44 Baby-Friendly hospitals and birth centers in the United States. The Baby-Friendly designation is given after a rigorous on-site survey is completed. The award is maintained by continuing to practice the Ten Steps as demonstrated by quality processes.
