Bone Scans

Fasting is not required before a bone scan.

  • You will receive an injection or IV containing an isotope.
  • Then you will be asked to wait for 1 to 3 hours.
  • You may also be asked to drink several glasses of water to clear the kidneys of any isotopes not picked up by the bones.
  • You’ll be asked to empty your bladder before being positioned on the scanning table.

The scan will take about 1 hour – during this time you may be repositioned to give the scanner different views of your bones.
