Program to Help Patients Cope With Cancer

Middletown, Ct. — Cancer patients and their families face numerous challenges. Suddenly plunged into a world of unfamiliar medical terms, tests, and treatments such as radiation, chemotherapy, or surgery – many feel overwhelmed.

Middlesex Hospital is offering a special program, designed to meet the needs of these patients and their families and friends, entitled “I Can Cope.”

I Can Cope is a program originally developed by the American Cancer Society. It is an educational series that provides information about cancer and its treatment and offers practical help in coping with some of the physical and emotional issues of living with cancer.

Upcoming sessions include:

Tuesday, March 6 — “Learning about Cancer and Cancer Treatments,” with Mark J. Kimmel, M.D., oncologist and Middlesex Hospital Cancer Center Medical Director.

Tuesday, March 13 — “Side Effects of Treatment: Fatigue and Pain,” with Cheryl Levesque, R.N., O.C.N., certified oncology nurse.

Tuesday, March 20 — “Mobilizing Resources and Support,” with Janis Leird, R.N., M.L.S., Patient Resource Librarian and Doreen Donahue, L.C.S.W., Oncology Social Worker.

“Taking Charge of Money Matters,” with Diane Eck, Financial Advisor.

Tuesday, March 27 — “Keeping Well in Mind and Body – Part One: Nutrition During and After Treatment,” with Laurie Hatch, R.D., dietitian.

“Exercise and Physical Activity During and After Treatment,” with Patrice Thomas, M.S.P.T., Physical Therapist.

Tuesday, April 10 — “Keeping Well in Mind and Body – Part Two: Communicating Concerns and Feelings,” with Doreen Donahue, L.C.S.W., Oncology Social Worker.

Tuesday, April 17 — “Spiritual Wellness and Celebration of Life,” with Reverend Richard Doyle, Middlesex Hospital Chaplain

All programs will take place from 4:00 to 5:30 p.m. in Conference Rooms A and B, at the Middlesex Hospital Cancer Center at 536 Saybrook Road in Middletown. Light refreshments will be served. Space is limited and registration is required by calling (860) 358-2053.
